Hearth and Barn in the News
We are excited to share Star Dancer's story and of the animals she loved. Star Dancer was the equine matriarch of more than a dozen of her 'children' which included goats, chickens and dogs -- she loved every one of them as if they were her own babies. Star Dancer's life began as a show horse before she was put out to breed and was horribly overbred over several years. Eventually she was able to live out her senior years with journalist and author Kelly Gray, who had the good fortune to move to a farm where Star Dancer loved to graze. Kelly fell in love with Star Dancer and became inspired to make the 'joy trees' featured on this site to help pay Star Dancer's vet bills, using reclaimed wood from Star Dancer's shelter. Though Star Dancer gained her angel wings on Dec. 26, 2020, Kelly continues to make her joy trees in support of Star Dancer's beloved eight remaining animals, several of whom have chronic and emergent medical needs.
